Food review

For me, the first question with regards to carrying anything on the track is one of weight. In regards to food, we have seen hikers on multi day walks carry freeze dried cheese cakes and the like. Great stuff no doubt, but not required as part of the required food pyramid to get through the walk.

Picture below shows our food laid out by day on the table.

Very boring I know, but each day is made up of the same core meals. Main dinner component is a Back Country Cuisine freeze dried meal. These come in one or two person helpings. There are many different varieties. They cost about $A15 each. Just add hot water, wait and eat. Have a small solid fuel heater to heat water where no cooking fires are available. In case we are still hungry, have taken additional mac/cheese packs. Note that we should be able to buy fresh fruit and vegetables in some of the villages along the way (including warm beers and coke). These will cost around $5 Kina each.

For breakfast, have tossed around choices of muesli, porridge or muesli bars. Ended up choosing to take 2 x muesli bars each for breakfast to speed up morning take off. In addition, we have cup of soups and tea/coffee etc.

For lunch, we have Mountain bread and various spreads including peanut butter, tuna sachets, vegemite etc.

For additional energy, we have included mixed fruit and toblerone chocolate.

Final weight of food is about 4kg per person. Nothing exciting to look forward to, but will get us through !
